Market Closing - Monday, 19 October 2026
- The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) fell by 3.64% to close at 4,996.61, compared with 5,185.10 at the close on October 16, 2026.
- The Indonesian rupiah depreciated by 0.17% to IDR 18,035 per USD, compared with IDR 18,005 per USD at the close on October 16, 2026.
Indonesia’s financial markets came under renewed pressure in Monday’s trading session, with both the JCI and the rupiah weakening. Market sentiment was weighed down by concerns over MSCI’s (Morgan Stanley Capital International) plan to reclassify Indonesia’s equity market as a Standalone Market, which could trigger foreign capital outflows. Investors also remained cautious ahead of Bank Indonesia’s (BI) interest rate decision scheduled for October 21, 2026.
Investors are awaiting BI’s policy rate decision on October 21, 2026, with the consensus expectation that the BI-Rate will remain unchanged at 5.75%, amid rupiah depreciation, rising government bond yields (SBN), and September inflation of 3.28%. BI is expected to rely on foreign exchange market intervention and hedging incentives to maintain rupiah stability.
The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) is accelerating capital market reforms by enhancing share ownership transparency and proposing to exclude stocks with high shareholding concentration (HSC) from JCI calculations. Although these measures aim to address MSCI’s concerns, market sentiment is likely to remain vulnerable until implementation details are clarified and MSCI’s response to the reforms becomes clearer.
Global
Wall Street closed mixed on Monday. The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.11% to 26,430.89, while the S&P 500 gained 0.41% to 7,690.73, supported by renewed buying in technology stocks. In contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged down 0.07% to 51,966.03. Concerns over elevated debt levels among AI companies and the outlook for returns on AI investments continued to weigh on market sentiment.
Oil prices advanced, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rising 2.91% to USD 103.36 per barrel and Brent crude gaining 0.61% to USD 109.28 per barrel. Escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, including attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and on energy infrastructure linked to Russia and Ukraine, continued to elevate supply disruption risks, although oil shipments from the Persian Gulf began to recover.
The US Dollar Index (DXY) strengthened by 0.13% to 101.98, supported by euro weakness amid political turmoil in France, intensifying Russia-Ukraine hostilities, and heightened tensions in the Middle East. Nevertheless, the US dollar’s direction remains influenced by expectations for Federal Reserve policy, with markets pricing in an 82.8% probability that interest rates will remain unchanged at the October 27-28, 2026, meeting.
China’s economy grew by 4.5% year-on-year (YoY) in Q3 2026, accelerating from 4.3% in Q2 2026. September industrial production increased by 5.5% YoY, up from 5.2% in August, exceeding the 5.4% market consensus and marking the strongest growth since March. Meanwhile, retail sales rose by 1.1% YoY, compared with 0.4% previously, supported by sales of communication equipment. Despite improvements in industrial activity and consumer spending, weak domestic demand remains a key challenge to the economic recovery.
The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) is scheduled to announce its benchmark lending rates today, with the one-year Loan Prime Rate (LPR) expected to remain at 3.0% and the five-year LPR at 3.5%. If unchanged, the decision would mark the 17th consecutive month without a rate adjustment, consistent with the central bank’s cautious approach to supporting China’s economic growth.
