Market Closing - Tuesday, 13 October 2026
Wall Street closed lower on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 declining 0.02% to 7,805.45, the Nasdaq falling 0.15% to 27,204.38, and the Dow Jones dropping 0.35% to 51,670.10. Market sentiment was weighed down by mixed earnings reports from banking institutions, concerns over technology stock valuations, and intensifying competition from China in the semiconductor industry.
Tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis escalated following an attack on the Saudi Aramco office complex in Dhahran, heightening the risk of energy supply disruptions in the Middle East. Oil prices strengthened, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rising 0.94% to USD 94.61 per barrel and Brent crude gaining 0.12% to USD 106.20 per barrel. Higher energy prices could fuel global inflation and increase import costs, potentially adding further pressure on the rupiah.
The US Dollar Index (DXY) declined 0.36% to 102.20 amid falling US Treasury yields, as investors assessed US inflation data for indications of the Federal Reserve’s future policy direction. Markets have scaled back expectations of an interest rate hike in October, although the possibility of a hike in December remains. Meanwhile, the Japanese yen strengthened following lower-than-expected Japanese wholesale inflation, although the prospect of a Bank of Japan (BoJ) rate hike remains open.
The US is scheduled to release its September inflation data this evening. Headline inflation is projected to rise to 0.6% month-on-month (MoM) and 3.6% year-on-year (YoY), from 0.4% and 3.4%, respectively. Meanwhile, core inflation is expected to ease to 0.2% MoM but increase to 2.5% YoY, compared with the previous readings of 0.3% and 2.4%, respectively. Higher headline inflation and annual core inflation could strengthen the US dollar and weigh on the rupiah, as these developments may prompt the Federal Reserve to maintain elevated interest rates for longer.
China’s September inflation data, due for release today, will be closely monitored to assess the recovery in domestic demand and the impact of rising global energy prices on cost pressures. An increase in Chinese inflation could signal an improvement in economic activity; however, higher production costs could also put pressure on industrial profit margins.
China’s September trade data, also due for release today, will attract market attention given China’s position as Indonesia’s largest trading partner. In August, China’s exports grew by 25% year-on-year, while imports increased by 28.2%, reflecting robust trade activity. A further increase in Chinese imports could boost demand for Indonesian export products, thereby supporting domestic economic growth.
