Market Closing – Monday, 12 October 2026
- The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) weakened to 5,936, down from the previous trading session's closing level of 6,094.
- The Indonesian Rupiah weakened to IDR 17,900 per USD, compared with the previous trading session's closing level of IDR 17,875 per USD.
Domestic Market
- Equity Market: The JCI declined to 5,936, primarily due to geopolitical developments and elevated energy prices. Escalating Middle East tensions, including Houthi attacks at Riyadh Airport and attacks on Aramco's oil company infrastructure, have kept oil prices elevated at approximately USD 105 per barrel. Persistently high oil prices have intensified inflationary concerns and strengthened demand for safe-haven assets.
- Foreign Exchange Market: The Rupiah weakened to IDR 17,900 per USD. One of the contributing factors was the relatively high yield on U.S. Treasury (UST) securities, which continued to attract global capital flows toward safe-haven assets and USD-denominated instruments. Key factors likely to influence the U.S. Dollar's near-term performance include U.S. jobless claims data and the upcoming speech by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh on 15 October 2026.
Global Market
- United Kingdom: Bank of England (BoE) Monetary Policy Committee member Catherine Mann stated that the UK labor market remains relatively stagnant. She expressed concerns about upcoming wage settlements amid expectations that rising fuel and energy costs could push inflation above 4% in early 2027. Mann highlighted an upside bias to the UK inflation outlook, warning that delaying interest rate increases could make it significantly more difficult to bring inflation back to the target level.
- Japan: Japanese household spending declined for the ninth consecutive month as persistent inflation continued to erode purchasing power. Inflation-adjusted household expenditure fell by 3.1% year-on-year in August, with the steepest declines recorded in education, food, and utilities. The continued contraction in household spending complicates the Bank of Japan's (BoJ) monetary policy communication as policymakers consider further interest rate hikes. Economists have cautioned that overly rapid monetary tightening could place additional pressure on economic activity.
Based on the above developments, the Rupiah is expected to trade within the range of IDR 17,850–17,950 per USD today, amid ongoing global geopolitical developments.
