Previous Trading Session (9 October 2026):
- The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) closed higher by 1.04% at 6,093.76.
- The Rupiah appreciated by 0.08%, closing at IDR 17,875 per USD.
In Friday’s trading session last week, both the JCI and the Rupiah strengthened against the US Dollar. Nevertheless, the Rupiah is expected to face challenges this week amid multiple market-moving factors, particularly external developments.
Domestically, Bank Indonesia (BI) has stated its commitment to conducting more aggressive foreign exchange market interventions to maintain Rupiah stability should global pressures intensify, particularly due to Middle East tensions, rising oil prices, and a stronger US Dollar. BI considers domestic conditions relatively manageable, supported by a trade surplus. However, BI will continue to monitor the movements of peer currencies as a benchmark for assessing the pressure on the Rupiah.
On Thursday, 15 October 2026, Bank Indonesia will release Indonesia’s External Debt (ED) data for August 2026. For reference, Indonesia’s external debt increased by 4.9% year-on-year in July 2026, with government debt accounting for the largest share. A significant increase in external debt could lead market participants to anticipate higher USD demand relative to IDR, potentially putting further pressure on the Rupiah.
Global
Wall Street equities closed higher in Friday’s trading session last week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.83%, the S&P 500 rose 0.59%, and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.64%. The gains followed a statement by US President Donald Trump indicating that Russia was willing to supply diesel to the United States and global markets. Additional diesel supplies from Russia are expected to help curb further increases in energy prices, although global oil prices remain elevated.
Key global developments attracting market attention this week include the IMF–World Bank meetings scheduled to take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from 12 to 18 October 2026. Market participants will closely monitor the meetings for updates on global economic growth, financial stability, and the outlook for international financial markets.
In the United States, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting is scheduled for 27–28 October 2026. Accordingly, market participants will closely assess incoming economic data and developments that could influence the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decisions. On Wednesday, 14 October 2026, the US Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures consumer inflation, will be released on both a monthly and annual basis. This will be followed by the Producer Price Index (PPI) release on Thursday, 15 October 2026. If inflation remains elevated, expectations of further interest rate increases could strengthen.
US labor market data will also be released on Thursday, 15 October 2026, including weekly initial jobless claims. In the previous week, jobless claims declined, indicating continued resilience in the labor market. Strong labor market conditions could sustain inflationary pressures, potentially influencing the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook.
Market participants will also monitor statements from Federal Reserve officials scheduled throughout the week, including remarks by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh during his meeting with IMF officials in Bangkok.
In China, several key economic indicators are also scheduled for release this week, including headline and core inflation data, as well as trade balance figures for September 2026. An increase in Chinese inflation alongside stronger import growth could provide positive sentiment for the Rupiah, given China’s importance as one of Indonesia’s major trading partners.
