Market Update 21 Oct 2026

21 Oct 2026

Market Closing - Tuesday, 20 October 2026

  • Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) strengthened by 5.65% to close at 5,278.89, compared with 4,996.61 at the close on 19 October 2026.
  • Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) appreciated by 0.28% to close at IDR 17,985 per USD, compared with IDR 18,035 per USD at the close on 19 October 2026.

Indonesia’s financial markets closed higher on Tuesday, with both the JCI and the rupiah posting gains. The rally was supported by equity buying and a weaker US dollar, while investors monitored capital market reform initiatives and Bank Indonesia’s interest rate decision.

Bank Indonesia (BI) is facing pressure to raise the BI-Rate from 5.75% to maintain rupiah stability and prevent capital outflows, with several economists anticipating a 25 - 50 basis-point hike. However, a sustained recovery in investor confidence will depend on improvements in capital market transparency and governance, following the threat of a potential downgrade of Indonesia’s market status by MSCI.

Global Markets

Wall Street closed mixed on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.02% to 52,495.88, while the S&P 500 rose 0.28% to 7,712.57, supported by positive corporate earnings reports and lower oil prices. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite edged down 0.02% to 26,424.82 amid pressure on technology and artificial intelligence (AI) stocks.

US-Iran tensions escalated after Iran refused to resume negotiations until the US lifts its port blockade and eases oil sanctions. Meanwhile, attacks on 18 vessels in the Strait of Hormuz over the past two weeks have heightened the risk of energy supply disruptions. Oil prices moved in different directions, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) falling 4.8% to USD 98.40 per barrel, while Brent crude edged up 0.07% to USD 109.36 per barrel. Although Middle Eastern oil flows have recovered to approximately 80% of pre-war levels, the risk of further escalation and distribution disruptions continues to keep oil prices elevated.

The US Dollar Index (DXY) weakened by 0.21% to 101.77, its lowest level in approximately three weeks, amid concerns surrounding the AI sector, lower oil prices, and weaker-than-expected US housing data. Markets expect the Federal Reserve (Fed) to keep interest rates unchanged at its meeting next week, although the possibility of a 25-basis-point rate hike in December 2026 remains open.

The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) kept its benchmark lending rates unchanged for the 17th consecutive month, maintaining the one-year rate at 3.00% and the five-year rate at 3.50%. Although China’s economy grew by 4.5% year-on-year (YoY) in Q3 2026, with improvements in industrial activity and retail sales, subdued credit demand and continued pressure on the property sector have prompted the central bank to maintain a cautious policy stance without introducing additional monetary stimulus.
