Market Update 8 Oct 2026

08 Oct 2026

Previous Trading Session (07 October 2026):

  • The Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) declined by 0.75% to 6,146.72, compared with 6,192.93 at the close on 06 October 2026.
  • The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) appreciated by 0.08% to 17,880/USD, compared with 17,895/USD at the close on 06 October 2026.

Indonesia’s financial markets closed mixed on Wednesday, with the IHSG declining while the rupiah strengthened. Market sentiment remained influenced by a stronger US dollar, rising oil prices, and uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s policy direction ahead of the release of the FOMC meeting minutes.

Indonesia’s foreign exchange reserves declined to USD 146.3 billion in September 2026, from USD 146.5 billion previously, mainly due to government external debt repayments and Bank Indonesia’s efforts to stabilize the rupiah. Despite the decline, reserves remained at a strong level, equivalent to 5.3 months of imports, well above the international adequacy standard of approximately three months. This continues to support Indonesia’s external resilience and rupiah stability.

Global

Wall Street closed lower on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average declining 0.66% to 51,179.87, the S&P 500 falling 0.22% to 7,801.77, and the Nasdaq Composite declining 0.22% to 27,538.69.

Market pressure was driven by an increase in the US Treasury 10-Year yield to 5.37%, its highest level since 2002, as well as the FOMC minutes indicating that a majority of policymakers still anticipate one additional rate hike before the end of 2026.

The FOMC minutes indicated that the probability of a rate hike in October 2026 has declined to approximately 19.4%, while the probability of a rate hike in December 2026 has increased to 64.1%. The combination of expectations for a higher-for-longer interest rate environment and rising US Treasury yields could continue to support a stronger US dollar and put pressure on emerging markets.

The conflict in Yemen and heightened US–Iran tensions have increased concerns over potential disruptions to global trade routes and energy supplies, particularly around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz.

Oil prices moved mixed, with WTI (West Texas Intermediate) declining 0.69% to USD 88.81 per barrel, while Brent crude increased 0.24% to USD 100.82 per barrel. The risk of supply disruptions remains a key factor that could keep oil prices and global market volatility elevated.

The US Dollar Index (DXY) strengthened by 0.39% to 102.22, its highest level since March 2025, supported by inflation concerns stemming from higher oil prices and expectations that the Federal Reserve will maintain a relatively tight monetary policy stance.

Later tonight, the US is scheduled to release weekly initial jobless claims, which are expected to rise to 200K from 197K previously. A higher-than-expected increase in jobless claims could signal weakening labor-market conditions and potentially limit further US dollar appreciation.
