Market Closing - Thursday, 22 October 2026
- The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) closed higher by 1.12% at 5,387.91, compared with its previous closing level of 5,328.36 on 21 October 2026.
- The Indonesian Rupiah closed weaker by 0.25% at IDR 18,050 per USD, compared with its previous closing level of IDR 18,005 per USD on 21 October 2026.
Indonesia's financial markets ended Thursday's trading session on a mixed note, with the JCI advancing while the Rupiah weakened. Investors continued to monitor capital market reforms and uncertainties surrounding MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International), while rising global oil prices added further pressure on the Rupiah amid expectations for monetary policy decisions from major central banks next week.
Global
Wall Street closed mixed on Thursday, with the Nasdaq plunging 2.60% to 26,008.86 and the S&P 500 declining 1.21% to 7,663.43, weighed down by concerns over the substantial funding requirements for AI investments and financing risks in the technology sector. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones edged up 0.02% to 52,867.98.
Separately, reports emerged regarding potential new US-Israeli strikes against Iran. Escalating geopolitical tensions prompted investors to shift toward safe-haven assets, driving the 10-year US Treasury yield lower to 4.972%.
Oil prices surged, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rising 2.48% to USD 99.55 per barrel and Brent crude gaining 4.15% to USD 113.33 per barrel, approaching their highest levels in five weeks. The rally was driven by intensified Houthi attacks on energy targets in Saudi Arabia and reports of potential new US-Israeli strikes against Iran, heightening the risk of oil supply disruptions in the Middle East. However, the recovery in Persian Gulf oil exports toward pre-war levels could potentially cap further price gains.
The US Dollar Index (DXY) weakened by 0.20% to 101.58, approaching a three-week low, amid concerns over the sustainability of AI investments and escalating US-Israeli geopolitical tensions with Iran. Risk-off sentiment supported the Japanese Yen and Swiss Franc as safe-haven currencies, while the Euro weakened.
Ahead of next week's Federal Reserve (Fed) policy decision, markets expect interest rates to remain unchanged. However, the probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike in December has increased to 74.8%.
The US released its latest weekly jobless claims data, which declined to 194,000 from the previous 200,000. The decrease in initial jobless claims indicates that the US labor market remains resilient, potentially supporting the US Dollar and exerting further pressure on the Rupiah.
