Jakarta, 16-18 August 2024 – PT Bank J Trust Indonesia Tbk (J Trust Bank) has once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting the education of Indonesian children by participating in the organization of informal education for the Junior Journalist Class community, Batch VII. The event, entitled “Arutala” (in Sanskrit it means ‘aspiration/dream’), took place on 16-18 August 2024 at the PTPIN Coastal Embankment Park, Kalibaru, North Jakarta.
Junior Journalist Class is an initiative that aims to provide journalistic knowledge and training (reading, writing, and photography) to children aged 6-12 years in the Cilincing Fishermen’s Village, North Jakarta.
As a coastal community, most of the adult population in the Cilincing Fishermen’s Village, North Jakarta work as fishermen, make processed products from seafood, or are casual laborers. Currently, the Cilincing Fishermen are included in the vulnerable and pre-prosperous community groups. With such socio-economic conditions, fishermen's children have limited access to knowledge and other educational facilities.
Through the Junior Journalist Class program, a group of volunteers with backgrounds as journalists and media practitioners provide 4 months of mentoring to students in the form of journalism training. This community development program provides fishermen's children with easy access to knowledge so that they have broad insights and are able to produce quality work that can be a means of communication and advocacy to stakeholders.
At the culmination of the event, 40 photographs from the participants were exhibited, telling the story of the daily life of the fishing village from the children's perspective. These works depict daily life in the Cilincing fishing village and provide a deep insight into children's perspectives on their environment.
In addition to the core activities of journalism training, this exhibition event was also filled with various additional activities involving children and the local community. One of them was a coloring competition participated by student children and coastal cleaning.
Syamsuddin Ilyas, Founder of Junior Journalist Class, said, "We are very grateful for the support given by J Trust Bank in this event. Junior Journalist Class is not only about learning journalism, but also about giving our children the opportunity to dream big and pursue their dreams. Through this training, we hope that children can develop skills that will help them build a brighter future." Ridyawan Amnar, Corporate Secretary Division Head of J Trust Bank, said, "We are proud to be able to support the peak event of the training activities for the Young Journalist Class. We appreciate fellow journalists who volunteered to accompany the child participants. Hopefully this activity will continue and in the future produce great Indonesian journalists and reporters."
